This adapted dish seems so appropriate for the season and the location I call home, here in the beautiful agricultural community of the Temecula Valley in California.”

With simple ingredients of chicken, grapes, walnuts, shallots, and fresh rosemary, plus the addition of sherry at the end of the cooking process, the aromas that will fill your house are warm and rich and savory. To veganize the recipe try substituting a large squash in place of the chicken and use vegan butter and coconut milk to replace the dairy.

It was 40+ degrees Celsius and the sun was blazing. The donuts were kept in the fridge until the very last minute for fear of instant meltification (is that even a word?). We were chugging enough water to sink a small ship before running to the dock in the backcountry of Lunenburg to get the shot. *click click click* Did we get it?

As a photographer, especially on location, you absolutely must possess the ability to think quickly and adapt on the fly. You have to be willing to lie down on the ground to get that angle. Climb up on a ladder and lean your body precariously over top to get that tablescape. Brace yourself against 40 degree heat to shoot those donuts.

@jennettedanielle came to my house on Thursday and brought an assortment of dried leaves, grasses, flowers, feathers, leather, driftwood, and copper pipe. She laid everything out on a table at random then assembled this gorgeous wall swag while we talked, drank steaming hot coffee, and I took photos.

We talked about the innate urge we both feel to “make”. We talked about how making and creating beautiful things helps relieve stress, releases pressure inside the head, and can lighten the burden of a heavy heart.
.
We talked about how we would both love to share the skills we’ve learned with others, possibly in workshop format, however, we also talked about how, when you’re self taught, you carry a doubt inside of you that you’d ever be good enough to do so.
.

I write a newspaper column called #TheNannyProject in which I interview people about grandparents, memories, food and recipes, and how they tie us together through the generations.

We laugh. We cry. Sometimes we sit in silence and let the emotions wash over, whether it be joy or sorrow.

I’m privileged to be let in. To listen, to talk, to feel the power in these deeply personal stories.

After many (many) years spent working in restaurants I am so incredibly grateful for weekends. I had resigned myself to the thought that I would never (ever) know what it was like to have dinner at home on a Friday or Saturday night. Though eating nachos with Chris, stems of white wine in hand, watching Ozark, as Elodie sleeps in her room down the hall, may SOUND like a small thing, it has actually become one of my life’s greatest pleasures.

A few things I’ve been thinking about lately :

1. I post a lot of horizontal flatlay photos, which, to me is interesting, because until last year when @kathyjollimore and I started Wild Card I NEVER did horizontal shots. Now they’re kind of my thing and I kind of love them.
.
2. I infused the butter for this bread pudding with tea, and it was so freakin’ good, but I’ve been thinking about infusing butter with another newly-legal plant to see what it’s like. Is that weird? Should I try it? 🌱🇨🇦
.
3. I watch a lot of YouTube and my preference for videos is art history. I did a history degree at the Mount, which I loved, but I really think I should have done an art history degree because I’m literally obsessed.
