I love photographing people.
Despite marketing myself primarily as a food photographer, every once in a while I get an inquiry about photographing people.
Lifestyle blogger photography.
When Jayda Ivy emailed me in the fall about working together on shots for her new website I was admittedly hesitant, however, after hearing Jayda's story, I knew I wanted to try and capture her spirit.
An incredible story.
From Jayda's website -
On the 6th of September, 2017 the worst hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic - Hurricane Irma - took the roof off of our home while I held on to my 3-month-old sons and sang, Jesus Loves Me.
After Hurricanes Irma, and Maria, respectively, destroyed her home in The Virgin Islands, Jayda was evacuated and traveled to Canada alone with her three-month old twin sons. You can read about her experience here. After telling me her incredible story over coffee we made a plan to capture some shots for her lifestyle blog.
What's the point?
When I met Jayda she'd only been in Halifax for three weeks. I asked her why she wanted to do photos after such a harrowing experience. She said that, other than her babies, working on her blog was the best way she'd found to take her mind off of the hurricanes for a few minutes.
For me this photo shoot pulled triple duty -
1. New work for me and new shots for Jayda's website.
2. It allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone.
3. Most importantly, I was able to help create, for an hour anyway, a fun experience for a person who had lived through some of the most devastating and destructive forces on the planet.
For that I am grateful.
