SUMMER IS HERE!!!

Whether a quick slice at breakfast, a snack on the go, packed up in a picnic basket, or on a platter at a BBQ, watermelon is THE quintessential summer staple.

Convincing Elodie to drink water is a never-ending task, and this summer, spending so much time outside, I know it will be even harder.

Luckily, she LOVES watermelon and can often be found, running through the grass barefoot, a half-gnawed slice in her hand, pink juice dribbling down her chin.

It may sound obvious (um, WATER-melon😂), but watermelon is 92% water. 92%!!! It’s a great (and easy) way to stay hydrated in the summer. 🍉

Style. It’s such a fascinating and complex, yet vague, concept. What is style? How do you know what your style is? Can you have more than one style? How does style influence your life?

Take me for example. My “style” (and I use that word loosely, and the quotation marks intentionally) is plain Jane (which is fitting since my middle name is Jane. In junior high I begged my Mum to let me legally change my first name to Jane and she said no). I wear a uniform of brown boots, brown belt, jeans, a t-shirt or button up shirt, a watch, and that’s pretty much it. My colour palette is blue, grey, denim, black, stripes, and sometimes white. In the summer I wear sandals. Plain. Jane.

Now take my food photography. I favour rich, vibrant colours with floral and botanical elements. Doilies, lace, vintage China dishes, and tarnished silverware fill my Instagram feed. I love gold, pink, mint green, and all of the blues. It makes me wonder.

On Tuesday, @lindsaycameronwilson and I got together. She made pink gazpacho. I shot photos and video. We talked, and laughed, and bonded over a Jewel song from the 90s. We had, as they say, a ball.

“Gazpacho is really just a savoury smoothie. Vegetables are blitzed together with herbs, spices, perhaps a little dairy and served cold on a hot summer’s day. Depending on the ingredients, it can be a soft green, bright red or in this case, a gentle salmon pink, coloured by peppery radishes and a dollop of rich-red harissa.

I prefer to call it a soup. When I wrote a juice book way back when, every vegetable in the world went through my juicer during the recipe testing process. One day, in a deadline induced state of confusion, I downed a glass of leek juice, thinking it was Granny Smith apple. The olfactory response hit first: my nose prickled when the onion notes hit, then my throat buckled under the burn. My senses then went into shock. I had tricked them, they told me, and I promised never to do it again.

This is why I cannot call a savoury soup a smoothie. My senses need to know what direction they’re going in. Smoothies are sweet, soups are savoury, and they have to be ready. So I respect that and celebrate this dish for what it is: fresh, peppery vegetables swirled together with a tang of cold yogurt and kick of heat. Gazpacho.”

It feels so trivial to post pictures of peaches and pretty pink cocktails in the wake of tragedy. It's a hard realization, knowing that even your heroes are not invincible to life's ultimate sadness.

That being said, I have a notion that pictures of peaches and pretty pink cocktails add teeny tiny sparks of light to the darkness - at least for me they do - so I'm gonna to keep lighting it up.
