One of the things I struggle with in food photography isn’t the photography itself (though don’t get me wrong, teaching yourself and learning food photography is a process that takes years). Something I REALLY struggle with is the conundrum of making food look “real” and “natural” when it’s not.
.
But you see, that’s not quite right either because, all of the food I shoot IS real, and it’s ALL edible. But guess what? Every single noodle, chili flake, and pool of oil is placed EXACTLY where I want, and there’s nothing “natural” about that.
.
I balance this internal struggle of fake vs. real by trying to think of my work as art (which is a whole different conundrum because, actually daring to think of myself as an artist makes me cringe). But isn’t that what food photography is? A dance of emotion, colour, texture, skill, and personal expression? Isn’t that art?

I’m excited to be part of a new recipe swap challenge with members of @thesupperclubmag community. Called #plateincommon, it’s a group of 22 food photographers and bloggers from all over the world - Australia, Canada, United States, Switzerland, Croatia, Spain, and more - gathered by #hocsupperclub maven @kayonreynalls.

Every two weeks the entire group will be making a different recipe from one of the others in the group and, if you’re into it, you can join in by making the same recipe and hash-tagging #plateincommon and #acommonplate.

This week we all made @loveisinmytummy’s Chili Garlic Pasta with Curried Breadcrumbs. I made a big batch of spaghetti aglio olio with extra garlic and extra chilies (a staple in our household), added barely cooked, still crunchy red onion, and topped it with breadcrumbs cooked crispy with olive oil and yellow curry powder. Since I’m the only one in my house who eats onion I had to eat the whole batch by myself. Poooooooor me. 🤷‍♀️😂
