Eatitorial's Fish Taco

HFXFB's representin' in the fall issue of Eat In Eat Out magazine.

First, Jessie from Purple House Café and I collaborated on a story about this past spring's FARM-MARKET-TABLE recipe contest with the Halifax Seaport Farmer's MarketCait from Eatitorial, and her winning Fish Taco, are featured in our article. Meanwhile, Kathy from eatHalifax! also wrote and shot a story about one of Halifax's fantastic new restaurants, 2 Doors Down.

Cait drove out to my house one sunny afternoon and whipped up a fish taco, which I then styled and photographed. The same day, we also got a really nice headshot of Cait but a few weeks later, she chopped her hair off! It looked so cute that we thought we should re-shoot. We met upstairs on the roof of the market one afternoon and got this super-cute pic:

You can read our story online here and while you're at it, check out Kathy's article here.

Garlic Scapes : what should I make with them?

I was excited to be invited to The Wolfville Farmer's Market last Wednesday night to speak about food blogging, photography and styling. I had the good fortune to finally meet Wendy McCallum from Simple Balance, and Mitzi from Box of Delights Bookstore (who was selling copies of Maritime Fresh!). They are lovely people working on completely different yet totally inspiring projects. I highly suggest checking out their websites.

During a break, I wandered around the market looking for inspiration and as soon as I saw these gorgeous garlic scapes there was no question they were coming home with me. I bought them from Sarah Pittoello of www.rerooted.ca, who had printed copies of her recipe for Garlic Scape and Cauliflower Soup next to the curly swirly bunches. I grabbed a copy of the recipe but I don't know - I think it's too hot for soup right now. I'm thinking of making a salad dressing instead. I think I (gasp!) need more salad in my life.

Have you ever cooked with garlic scapes? What do you suggest I do with them?

Quail's Eggs : Brow of the Mountain Farm

My friend Asheley over at Asheley Eats posted this on her Facebook wall the other day - 'Anyone looking for some quail eggs? Five bucks for two dozen!'.

I messaged her back within moments and a few minutes after that, found myself at the beginning of an e-mail conversation with Jake Spinney, owner of Brow of the Mountain Farm in Aylesford, Nova Scotia.

Jake was kind enough to deliver my eggs to me on Saturday night, and even as I type this, I have the little straw carton sitting on my desk beside me because they are so pretty I can't stop looking at them!

Jake says at the moment, his farm's main focus is the quail and their eggs, but later this year, he will be moving into the world of raising heritage sheep, pigs and goats.

And, he says their are lots more eggs where mine came from so spread the word!!

I'm still not 100% sure what I'm going to do with mine, but if you'd like to order some for yourself, please contact Jake at (902) 698-0877 or e-mail browofthemtnfarmATgmailDOTcom. $5 for two dozen gorgeous little eggs. How can you go wrong?
